CRIME PREVENTION

CITIZEN'S ACADEMY

The Potter County Sheriff's Office has created several programs to better help the community by providing information and services. This consists of numerous specialty areas that cover a broad range of topics. Below are some of the programs and services offered by the Sheriff's Office and a brief description of their goals.

CITIZEN'S ACADEMY

The PCSO Citizen's Academy is a 12-week program designed to familiarize residents of Potter County with the goals, objectives, organizational structure and general operating procedures of the Potter County Sheriff’s Office.


Its objective is to build a better understanding between citizens and the Sheriff’s Office through education and communication and to promote goodwill and community support. The instructors are supervisors, deputies and personnel from the Sheriff’s Office who teach in their own areas of expertise. Each instructor has years of training and experience in the subject they will instruct. All personnel bring street experience and expertise to the classroom. There is no fee for participation in the Citizen’s Academy.


SCHEDULE

For 12 weeks starting in September, classes will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6 pm to 9 pm. There are a total of 12 classes with one of those being held on a Saturday.  Extracurricular activities may also be involved on weekends. An example of that would be the firearms training and patrol ride along sections.

  • Overview of the Potter County Sheriff’s Office

CRITERIA FOR PARTICIPATION

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age

  • Applicants who reside in Potter County, Amarillo, TX will be given preference

  • Applicants must agree to a background check

  • Applicants must have NO criminal record

  • Academy classes will be limited to 32 students

  • The Sheriff will make the final selection of Academy participants

HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMY

HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMY

The High School Academy is just like the Citizen’s Academy, but open to students only. It is a nine-week program designed to familiarize residents of Potter County with the goals, objectives, organizational structure and general operating procedures of the Potter County Sheriff’s Office.


The objective is to build a better understanding between citizens and the Sheriff’s Office through education and communication and to promote goodwill and community support. The instructors are supervisors, deputies and personnel from the Sheriff’s Office who teach in their own areas of expertise. Each instructor has years of training and experience in the subject they will instruct. All personnel bring street experience and expertise to the classroom. There is no fee for participation in the High School Citizen’s Academy.

For nine weeks, starting in January, classes will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6 pm to 9 pm. There are a total of 10 classes with two being given within the same week. Extracurricular activities may also be involved on weekends. An example of that would be the firearms training and patrol ride along sections.

CRAZE TRAINING

CRASE TRAINING

CRASE is an acronym for Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events. It gives the attendee the tools and knowledge of how to react to an active shooter event regardless of their location. This program has been presented to over 100 groups by the Potter County Sheriff’s Office. The program has been taught to the general public, churches, civic groups, neighborhood organizations and businesses. We have had groups attend from all over the Texas Panhandle. We also have had groups from New Mexico and Oklahoma attend. In addition to the C.R.A.S.E. we also go and do a Risk Assessment of the physical facilities of any church, business and school.  In addition, we offer Risk Assessment to residential locations.

EDDIE EAGLE / KID SAFETY

EDDIE EAGLE / KID SAFETY

The Eddie Eagle program was created by and endorsed by the National Rifle Association and is used worldwide. The program is an interactive program for students PreK through 5th grade that teaches them what to do if they should come across a gun. The program is easily tailored to fit the school’s needs. It generally is taught to a grade level at a time and is best taught in a 45-55 minute time frame. Potter County Sheriff’s Office reaches between 18,000 to 20,000 public students each school year in the greater Amarillo area. We have forty elementary schools that we visit annually.

KID PRINT

KID PRINT

Kid Print is an activity that the Potter County Sheriff’s Office offers to the Citizens of Potter County, Texas.  We make photo ID cards for children from birth until they obtain a driver’s license.  It has a current photo of the child along with name, date of birth, sex, height, weight, eye color, hair color, glasses or any special feature like braces. We also put a parent/guardian telephone number on the card as well.
