The Potter County Detention Center was completed in November of 1995. It is a 125,000 square foot facility that consists of 576 beds in the General Population portion, and also includes a 27 bed Infirmary and two Violent Cells. The Center houses inmates awaiting trial, inmates sentenced to County Corrections, and those sentenced and awaiting entrance into the State and Federal Corrections Institutions. The Potter County Detention Center is the operations center for many of the Special Programs offered to persons convicted of minor crimes who have been deemed low risk offenders. These persons are allowed special circumstance sentences that serve to both lower costs to the taxpayers and enforce sentences on those found guilty of crimes against their communities. These programs include: Work Release Sentences Programs like these and others help reduce costs involved with housing and caring for offenders who do not require standard jail time to correct illegal behaviors and repay their debt to society. Employees assigned to work at the Potter County Detention Center are licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) as having completed the minimum educational requirements and training as mandated by the Commission to perform duties required by their positions. Officers have to continue their education and training throughout their careers to maintain licensing. This helps to provide their respective agencies with the best possible service. The Potter County Sheriff has made educating officers one of his top priorities to enhance safety and security of both the officers working and the inmates housed at the Detention Center. The transportation section is a part of the Corrections Division and consists of one TDC Coordinator and six transportation officers. Transportation officers are trained in specific shooting and handcuffing techniques as well as defensive tactics and driving skills. These special skills help in the daily execution of their duties. The transportation section is responsible for transporting inmates to and from various courts, other county jails, hospitals, doctors' offices, and other agencies throughout the state of Texas. They are also responsible for transporting inmates to various TDC facilities and picking up inmates on bench warrants within the state. The transportation section also delivers daily paperwork to local agencies and officials within Potter County. Transportation officers are tested annually to maintain their positions within the transportation section. This test entails weapons proficiency, negotiation of an obstacle course, and a quarter mile run. Officers desiring a transfer to the transportation section must pass the same qualification tests as well as an oral interview board. For more information contact: |
